Currency and payment

The official currency is the euro, just as it is in mainland France. You therefore won’t need to worry about currency conversion if you’re coming from France or the eurozone.

Practical advice

Tips are not compulsory, but are always appreciated in restaurants and for tour guides
Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops
Do, however, make sure you have some cash to hand for local markets, small shops, activity providers and beachside stalls
ATMs are available in the main towns in the South
In rural areas or in remote natural locations, cash payments are often the only option

Shops and opening hours

General opening hours

Shops are generally open from Monday to Saturday, from 8 am to 7 pm
On Sunday mornings, some shops and supermarkets are open until 1 pm
On public holidays, most shops are closed, so do remember to do your shopping in advance

Local markets

Markets are a real institution in Martinique. They are a must-visit for discovering local produce, Creole spices, exotic fruits and handicrafts. Check with your tourist information centre to find out the days and times of markets near you.

Retail trade

There are supermarkets and hypermarkets in the main towns in the South for your everyday shopping.
