Set off with a light heart

Find all the tips and resources you need here to organise your holiday in southern Martinique, stress-free!

Before you set off for Martinique, it is important to ensure you have the necessary documents. As Martinique is a French department, French nationals and citizens of the European Union may travel with a valid national identity card or passport.

Visitors from other countries are generally required to hold a valid passport. Depending on your nationality, additional formalities may be required. We advise you to check the entry requirements with the relevant authorities or your airline before departure.

Martinique enjoys a warm, sunny tropical climate all year round, with an average temperature of 26°C. There are two main seasons:

The dry season (December to May): this is the dry season, ideal for travellers wishing to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities. The days are sunny, rain is rare and temperatures are pleasant. This is the peak tourist season.

The rainy season (June to November): the wet season brings short but heavy showers. Be aware, however, of the cyclone season, which runs from July to October.

As with any tropical destination, there are mosquitoes in Martinique, but by taking a few simple precautions you can enjoy your stay with complete peace of mind:

  • Take an effective (natural) mosquito repellent with you
  • Wear clothing that covers you up in the evening and in the woods
  • If possible, choose accommodation with mosquito nets or air conditioning
  • Consult your doctor before you travel to ensure you have the appropriate vaccinations

The South is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. To make the most of them, remember to pack:

  • A waterproof bag to protect your belongings
  • Sun cream with SPF 50+ (UV rays are particularly strong)
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • Water shoes for rocky or coral beaches
  • Fins, a mask and a snorkel for exploring the seabed
  • A bottle of water and some snacks, as some beaches are remote

The area also offers numerous footpaths through unspoilt and spectacular countryside. Before setting off on a hike, make sure you have:

  • Closed, waterproof walking boots
  • Lightweight but covering clothing (for sun protection and dense vegetation)
  • A mosquito repellent
  • Sufficient water (at least 1.5 litres per person)
  • An offline mapping app or a local guide
  • A lightweight raincoat, as showers can be sudden

It is strongly recommended that you do not set off alone and that you tell someone your route.

The south of the island is a real paradise for lovers of outdoor activities. Snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, jet-skiing – the possibilities are endless! To enjoy them safely:

  • Check the weather conditions before setting out to sea
  • Book your activities with approved and certified providers
  • Please stick to the designated swimming areas and observe the warning flags
  • Avoid swimming alone in remote areas

Martinique boasts an exceptional wealth of natural beauty: unspoilt seabeds, mangroves, tropical forests and unspoilt beaches. To ensure that these wonders are preserved for future generations, each and every one of us has a part to play.

On the beaches and in the water

  • Never walk on the coral and avoid touching it – it is extremely fragile
  • Use biodegradable sun creams, which are less harmful to marine ecosystems
  • Always take your rubbish with you, even on the most remote beaches
  • Respect marine wildlife: do not get too close to turtles and other protected species

Hiking and the great outdoors

  • Please stay on the marked paths to protect the vegetation
  • Please do not pick plants or disturb wild animals
  • Please do not light fires outside designated areas
  • Please report any incidents or damage to the relevant authorities

Day-to-day life during your stay

  • Choose local producers and artisans: markets, Creole restaurants, local shops
  • Choose accommodation providers committed to environmental sustainability
  • Limit your use of single-use plastic – local alternatives are available
  • Choose activity providers who are responsible and respectful of the environment and local wildlife

By choosing to travel responsibly, you are making a direct contribution to the conservation of the island and to supporting local communities. Thank you for your commitment!
