La Savane des Pétrifications

Natural Site

The Savane des Pétrifications is a natural area of great geological significance and offers a landscape that is both exceptional and unique in Martinique (located in Sainte-Anne). The Savane des Pétrifications is a natural cross-section of the core and deep roots of an ancient volcano, 22 million years old and now completely eroded. This site was the site of significant hydrothermal activity characterized by the circulation of mineralizing fluids rich in silica, which are responsible for the petrification process.
