La Maison du Bagnard
Le Diamant
A site of popular remembrance facing the Diamant Rock, which has been designated a historic monument since 2009; it has become a symbol of the spirit of the Maroons and the struggle against colonial rule.
The hut is tiny but showcases his artistic talent and his quest for peace. The convict in question is Médard ARIBOT, an unclassifiable figure and self-taught sculptor who was sentenced to 20 years in a penal colony in French Guiana for petty theft. Repatriated to his native island in 1953, he built this hut using recycled materials, ornate decorative elements, and bright colors.
